If you are looking to buy a home pole dancing pole, there are a few things to bear in mind before you take the plunge.
Consider the 3 P’s:
Portable or permanent
Some people are happy to make a dancing pole a permanent feature in their house. If you want the extra security of knowing your pole is screwed into a ceiling beam, and are not shy to have guests know about your hobby, then this option is for you.
The electra pole can be screwed into a ceiling joist for security.
If you want the flexibility of being able to dismantle your pole, or take it to a friends house then a portable pole may be best.
With the X-pole you don’t have to compromise on stability either, and it comes free with a carry bag to make moving the pole extra easy.
Pole material
There has been much debate on which pole material is best for learning how to pole dance.
Some believe that if you can dance on a steel pole you can dance on any pole. Others prefer the extra grip a chrome coated pole can provide.
We answer the question which pole coating is best for grip here .

There are poles available for most budgets starting from £50 right up to £500 for free standing poles with integrated stages!
Some of the lower end poles are just not up to the pressure pole dancing puts on them. For a budget option that doesn’t compromise on safety try the My Sexy Little pole.
If you want a top quality pole without breaking the bank try the X-Pole sport.
Celeb magazine Life and Style recently reported that hollywood actress Demi Moore harbours a secret pole dancing hobby!
A source told the magazine that the “Ghost” star took advantage of an installed pole at a celeb party in exclusive venue Chateau Marmont, and gave an impromptu pole dancing display to the celebrity guests.
Her moves including a spinning invert, were said to have impressed onlookers. She has come far from her “Striptease” days.
Soon after Demi’s daughter Rumer had a spin on the pole much to the encouragement of mother Demi and celeb pals Jennifer Aniston and Leonardo Dicaprio.
Apparently Jennifer cheered the loudest, being an avid pole dancing fan to keep herself thin and in shape for acting roles.
“She thinks it’s great for fitness and it makes her feel sexy.”
Unfortunately we weren’t able to confirm what type of pole was used, but the X-Pole range is proving to be particularly popular in America at the moment.

Pole dancing poles come with a variety of coatings to give varying levels of grip and durability.
If you find yourself with slippery hands with pole dancing it might be an idea to start with a grippier pole from the outset.
However, some believe a stainless steel coating encourages pole dancers to build up their grip naturally. Others prefer the increased grip a chrome or brass coated pole can provide.
Here we compare the two most popular pole coatings chrome and stainless steel.
Stainless Steel
This is a popular material for budget poles due to the high availability of stainless steel and its ability to stand up against common fluids that can come into contact with the pole such as body lotions, fake tans and sweat.
However, it is not as grippy as some other coatings such as brass and chrome.
There is a school of though that if you learn to pole dance on a stainless steel pole you can dance on any type of pole, as your natural grip strength increases to make up for lack of grip of the pole.
Stainless steel poles include the My Sexy Little Pole
Chrome
Many of the higher quality poles have a chrome coating, which is widely thought to be one of the best pole coatings for maximum grip.
An advantage is that although you can achieve a greater grip of the pole versus stainless steel, you can still spin with ease.
If you purchase a chrome pole be sure to avoid cleaning your pole with a product that could damage the coating. This may seem common sense but scowering pads and bleach do not make good pole cleaners!
Two good and cheap pole cleaning products are rubbing alcohol and baby wipes.
Chrome poles include The new X Pole
Whether you are working in a pole dancing club, or just looking to add a bit of glamour to your performance at a pole show, a long pole dancing gown (or long dress) can add a touch of class to your pole dancing wardrobe.
When choosing a gown here are a few tips to bear in mind:
Don’t cover up too much!
It is still important to be able to grip your pole where it is needed. For example, try to choose a dress that is sleeveless or short sleeved, and look for splits at the leg so you can get a good grip of the pole with your legs. A dress with a side split can normally be tied up at the side for when extra leg grip is needed.
Look for stretchy fabrics
You need the full range of motion of your shoulders and body when pole dancing, so the last thing you want is a restrictive fabric. Most pole dancing clothes come in stretchy lycra and spandex fabrics to allow free movement and ensure you don’t get tangled up!
Get ready to shine
This isn’t the time to fade into the background! Pole dancing gowns come in a whole range of bright colours, like neon pink and green. Or if you are looking for something a little more understated look for sparkling diamantes and silver trims to stand out.

Whether your putting on a show for your pole school, pole dancing club, or even your partner, choosing a theme for your set can add that extra spice to your performance.
By choosing a costume and taking on a character, you can tailor your act to suit. You could tailor an army girl act by doing moves like the helicopter and dancing to “spitfire” by the prodigy. Or a cat girl act could involve floorwork and crawling moves.
One thing to look out for is that your themed outfit does not look too “costumey”. What we mean by that is that you shoudn’t go out and buy a full on halloween costume! A subtle suggestion of a theme can work just as well.
Here are a few ideas to help you choose a theme for your next performance:
This saucy military themed outfit is perfect for an army girl themed set.

For someone who has decided to take the plunge and go to their first pole class, it can be an exciting yet daunting experience. You may be asking yourself what should I wear? Do I need platform shoes? Will everyone else have more experience than me? Here we attempt to address some of those questions you may be having so you can go into your first pole class confident and prepared.
What should I wear?
For most pole classes, people normally wear standard gym attire. This could be shorts and a T-Shirt or spaghetti strap top. This way you leave the important parts of your body (the legs and arms) exposed so you can get better contact with the pole (and have more chance of staying on it!).
Most classes leave it up to you if you want to wear a pair of platform or pole dancing shoes. If you are a complete newbie to the pole it may be an idea to skip the shoes for now and go bear foot or with a pair of trainers or socks on. It can be difficult enough to master pole dancing for the first time without worrying about toppling over! Plus there will be plenty of time for trying out new shoes later in your pole dancing lessons.
Will everyone else be more experienced than me?
Pole classes are normally split into categories. If you look for pole classes advertising themselves as “for beginners” or an introductory course, you should be in good stead. This way the more experience pole dancers will be in a separate class, so you fellow classmates will be on exactly the same level as you.
Will I have to take my clothes off?
The vast majority of pole classes are for fun anf fitness only, so they wouldn’t expect you to start stripping (unless you wanted to get chucked out!). If this is what you are looking to do, then by all means look for a class that is tailored more towards lap dancing.
Beginners pole classes generally are not a stripper training program, they are simply for normal people who want a fun way to get fit and meet new people.
What if I am terrible at it!?
Just remember that even the famous pole dancers like KT Coates, Pantera and Felix stood in front of a pole for the first time thinking the exact same thing as you. There is no such thing as a naturally born pole dancer, we all have to start somewhere. And no matter how terrible you think you are at first, in just a few weeks time you will have improved dramatically.
I never though I could invert, it took me 5 months of pole classes to even try. But I did it eventually and nothing can beat that feeling of achieving the seemingly impossible.
So what are you waiting for?
Start googling for pole classes in your area, check the yellow pages or ask around. And get yourself down to a pole class ASAP to start getting fit, having fun and achieving the impossible today!
